Forklift Forks - Making A Good Purchasing Decision

When parts wear out they will need to be replaced. By replacing just the part that wears out you can save considerable amounts of money over replacing the whole equipment. When replacing parts you have the option to replace with used or new parts. When it comes time to replace your forklift forks, you have several options available to you.

By understanding the options that you have you can make a better purchasing decision. This will ensure that you purchase the forks that will work at optimum performance for your work needs. With optimum performance, you have increased productivity and reduced material damage.

When looking to replace your old ones with regular forks consider going with Vetter Quality Forks. They come with a reinforced heel that gives them longer life. They are designed to accommodate all makes and models of forklifts.

Plant forks are designed to accommodate a specific make and model of equipment. These can be obtained in varying lengths to suit any needs you may have.

For telescopic extending forks, the Manutel G2 is a good option to go with. They lock on with a locking pin making them quick and easy to attach and remove from your equipment. With Manutel G2, you are guaranteed that all extensions are within the legal limits. These are suitable for indoor uses but can be used on a limited outdoor basis.

The stainless-steel-cladded forklift fork is the best option for areas that must be kept spark free. These areas include explosive environments where paint, chemicals and explosives are handled. These are also a great choice for food preparation areas for hygiene purposes.

ITA Class 2 and Class 3 Block forks are designed to lift large amounts of cement or concrete blocks at one time. These have a concave radius and elongated tube for application on rough terrain. These are the choice for those in the construction field where the ability to move this material in record time increases productivity of the job.

Other options include tapered and blunt end forks. Tapered works great for inserting into the spaces in pallets for easy lifting. Blunt ends are optimum for handling products where there is a risk of puncturing the product or container with pointed ends. These include containers such as steel and plastic drums, enclosed boxes and plastic bins.

In some instances, you can get away with using a regular standard forklift fork and utilize the use of a fork cover. The fork cover helps to prevent any type of marks or marring being left on the container or the product. The covers also help to protect the forks from heavy exposure to chemicals and other environmental factors that can lead to damage to the forks. This can help to extend the life of your new forks. Due to covers being able to cause friction they are however not suitable for explosive environments that need to remain spark-free.

Maintenance - Keeping Your Truck Up and Running

The Hyster distribution network can offer you an extensive range of service & maintenance options, all of which are designed to meet your specific requirements.

With a wide variety of solutions available, you can choose with confidence the best quality/price combination to suit your business needs, safe in the knowledge that your Hyster service engineer is dedicated to maximising the uptime of your fleet.

Each contract states period, the type of service work to be carried out, price and benefits:

Regular Maintenance Contract:

  • Regular forklift truck inspections, planned by your dealer and conducted by a specialist technician, in accordance with the manufacturer's service schedule.
  • Each inspection includes an oil change, lubrication, checks and adjustments, for a pre-agreed price.
  • The inspection report lists the maintenance operations.
  • The dealer will draw up a parts and labour quotation for any extra work that is recommended following this inspection, in order to optimise the availability of your truck and minimise the risk of damage and major repairs.

The Preventive Maintenance Contract:

  • This is a maintenance contract with recommended periodic service intervals, aimed at preventing breakdowns.
  • It consists of a complete inspection of all the maintenance items described in the manufacturers service manual for your lift truck.
  • The pre-agreed, all inclusive maintenance price includes spare parts, labour and the services of a technician. The daily checks/controls do not form part of the contract.
  • The maintenance report recommends essential repairs that need to be carried out and quotes them separately.
  • This allows the you to plan maintenance expenditure, which is made easier by prior knowledge of the cost, in line with the hourly estimated service schedule.

The Full Service Contract:

  • A complete service contract from your Hyster dealer, allowing you to focus completely on your business.
  • Your dealer agrees with you a “technical” monthly fee, for a period, typically between 36 to 60 months, in line with the hourly service schedule, which covers parts, labour and the services of a technician.
  • It covers all the maintenance and repair works.
  • Daily checks and damage repairs following a handling incident or an accident are excluded.  The contract can also include a tyres option.
  • The advantages include: Planning and control of all expenditure; No surprise invoices! Improved cash flow; Optimum use of your truck; Reduced operating costs and a higher resale value for your truck.

Rental Including Maintenance:

  • In this case, your Hyster dealer retains ownership of the truck, and you hire it for a period of 3 to 5 years, with the benefit of Full Service.
  • In return for an inclusive monthly technical rental fee (Full Service) and financing (Rental), you have access to the truck(s) agreed in the contract.
  • By the end of the contract, the truck has paid for itself.  The total monthly rental fee takes account of depreciation, residual value and the different servicing schedules.
  • The contract makes a replacement truck available to you in case of breakdown outside the contractual period.
  • The supply of pneumatic tyres can be included as an option under the technical rental.
  • Advantages: You enjoy the benefits of both renting and Full Service but you are released from all the processes associated with owning and reselling your truck.
